St. Martinville, Louisiana - On March 11, 2025, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I initiated an investigation into a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 31, near Lady of the Lake Road in St. Martin Parish. The incident resulted in the death of 33-year-old Trey Comeaux from New Iberia, Louisiana.
According to preliminary findings, Comeaux was walking south along LA Hwy 31 while pushing a bicycle through heavy fog. At the same time, a 2012 RAM was traveling in the same direction. For reasons that remain unclear, the RAM collided with Comeaux, causing him to be propelled into the northbound lane. Shortly after this initial impact, a northbound Dodge Charger also struck him.
The injuries sustained by Comeaux were fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both vehicles, who were properly restrained, sustained no injuries. In accordance with standard procedure, a toxicology sample from Comeaux has been collected for analysis. It is important to note that the driver of the RAM was not suspected of impairment and willingly provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol present.
This incident is still under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances leading to the crash. In light of this tragic event, Louisiana State Police are reminding pedestrians of the importance of safety while walking along roadways. State law mandates that pedestrians use a sidewalk when one is available. If a sidewalk is not present, it is advisable for pedestrians to walk facing oncoming traffic whenever practical. This practice allows them to better anticipate the approach of vehicles and react quickly.
