Louisiana Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-55 Claims Life of Hammond Man

Hammond, Louisiana – A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 55 near LA Highway 3234 in Tangipahoa Parish late Friday evening, according to Louisiana State Police.

William Traylor, 60, of Hammond, Louisiana lost his life after being hit by a northbound vehicle while on the interstate. The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. on April 4, 2025.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted by Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L, a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling northbound in the right lane of Interstate 55 when Traylor entered the roadway and was struck. The circumstances that led Traylor to be on the interstate remain under investigation.

Authorities pronounced Traylor deceased at the scene. The driver of the Nissan, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As part of standard protocol in fatal crash investigations, toxicology samples were collected from both the pedestrian and the driver for analysis. The results of these tests will form part of the ongoing investigation.

Louisiana State Police remind the public about critical safety measures. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Walking along interstate highways is prohibited by Louisiana law except in emergency situations. In areas where pedestrian traffic is permitted, safety officials recommend staying alert, walking facing oncoming traffic, wearing reflective clothing to enhance visibility, and avoiding distractions.
