New Iberia, Louisiana – A devastating house fire in New Iberia, Louisiana, has claimed the life of a 56-year-old homeowner. The blaze, which occurred on Tuesday, September 3, in the 200 block of San Jose Street, was responded to by the New Iberia Fire Department just after 5 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found two individuals who had managed to escape, one of whom was injured, and were informed that a third person was still inside the residence. Despite their best efforts, firefighters were unable to save the life of the victim, who was pulled from the fire.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the home’s hallway near the living room. However, what is particularly concerning is that deputies were unable to confirm the presence of working smoke alarms in the home. This lack of early warning may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

State Fire Marshal Chief Bryan J. Adams is urging all Louisiana families to take heed of this incident and ensure their homes are equipped with functioning smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are a crucial layer of protection against fire-related injuries and fatalities.

The Operation Save-A-Life program provides free smoke alarm installations to those who cannot afford them. Interested individuals can visit the State Fire Marshal’s website at lasfm.org or contact their local fire department to request a free installation.
