Zachary, Louisiana - Just before 9:30 pm on January 24, 2024, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A were called to a collision involving two vehicles on LA 64 near Tucker Road. Sadly, the crash resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man named Jeffery Variste of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to the initial examination, Variste was driving an eastbound 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck on LA 64, while a 2012 Dodge pickup truck was heading west on the same road. Without a clear cause, the Dodge veered into the opposite lane and collided directly with the Chevrolet.

Following the crash, the person driving the Dodge ran away from the area on foot and was unable to be found. Variste sustained severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. Another person in the Chevrolet had less severe injuries and was also taken to a local hospital for medical attention.

The investigation of this crash is still ongoing, and Troopers are requesting anyone who has details about the incident to reach out to Louisiana State Police Troop A at 225-754-8500.
