Independence, Louisiana – A devastating two-vehicle crash occurred on LA 43 near Turkey Creek Road in Livingston Parish on August 26, 2024, resulting in the tragic death of 47-year-old Raymond Lexia Jr. of Independence, Louisiana. The incident happened just before 6:00 p.m. when Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to the scene.
According to the preliminary investigation, Lexia was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger northbound on LA 43 when a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 35-year-old Mitchell Ballard, traveling southbound on the same highway, veered off the roadway, overcorrected, and entered the northbound lanes, colliding with the Ford in a head-on manner.
Despite wearing his seatbelt, Lexia was pronounced deceased at the scene. Ballard, who was not properly restrained, sustained minor injuries. Following the investigation, Ballard was arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish Jail on charges of Negligent Homicide and Careless Operation.
While impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis. The incident is still under investigation, and Troopers urge motorists to exercise caution and responsibility while driving.
“Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted; follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained,” said a Louisiana State Police spokesperson. “While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.”
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
