Belle Chasse, Louisiana – On Saturday, January 25, 2025, at approximately 7:45 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B commenced an investigation into a tragic crash involving a pedestrian on LA 3017, also known as Engineers Road, near Commerce Street in Plaquemines Parish. The incident resulted in the death of 69-year-old Jamie Young, of Harvey, Louisiana.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that Young was walking in the southbound lane of LA 3017 while wearing dark clothing. At the same time, a 1999 Mercedes M-Class SUV was traveling southbound and collided with Young. The impact caused severe injuries, and unfortunately, Young was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes was properly restrained and reported no injuries from the crash. Although there were no signs of impairment, the driver voluntarily provided a breath sample, which indicated a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.000g%. The level of impairment, if any, of Young is currently unknown, and toxicology results are pending.
This incident underscores the importance of pedestrian safety. When crossing or walking near roadways, it is crucial for pedestrians to remain visible. Walking against the flow of traffic allows pedestrians to see oncoming vehicles, enabling them to respond quickly if necessary. Additionally, wearing brightly colored clothing or utilizing reflective accessories during low-light conditions can greatly enhance visibility for drivers, potentially preventing tragic incidents like this one.
