Harvey, Louisiana – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B were informed about a multi-vehicle collision on US 90B at Scotsdale Drive on the evening of Tuesday, April 30, 2024, around 7:00 pm. Sadly, the crash resulted in the death of Michael Barahona, a 23-year-old from Harvey, Louisiana.

Initial findings showed that Barahona was riding an eastbound 2008 Ducati motorcycle on the lower level of US 90B near Scotsdale Drive. Simultaneously, John Semien, 67, from Terrytown, Louisiana was driving a 2001 GMC pickup truck south on Scotsdale Drive. According to reports from Louisiana State Police, Semien ignored a stop sign at the intersection and crossed into Barahona’s path, causing the front of the Ducati to strike the passenger’s side of the GMC pickup.

Barahona, who had a DOT-approved helmet on, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Initially, Semien tried to run away from the scene, but was caught by deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office not far from where the crash occurred.

Semien showed signs of being impaired during the investigation and was arrested and taken to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center charged with Vehicular Homicide, Hit and Run, and Disregarding a Stop Sign. The crash is still being investigated.

The Louisiana State Police frequently see the tragic results of avoidable crashes and recommend that drivers have a plan for drinking alcohol to avoid impairing their judgment and abilities on the road. It is crucial to never drive while impaired or get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. Let’s all prioritize safety when driving.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
