Port Allen, Louisiana – Shortly before 5:30 am on February 24, 2024, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A were called to a collision involving two vehicles on US 190 at S. Winterville Road in Port Allen, Louisiana. The crash resulted in the fatalities of David Rideaux, aged 35, and Dwight Pelican Sr., aged 34, both residents of Opelousas, Louisiana.

The initial inquiry found that a 2018 Volvo concrete truck was heading east on US 190 after turning from S. Winterville Road. Meanwhile, Rideaux was driving a 2012 Buick Lacrosse east on US 190, nearing the intersection of S. Winterville Road. The Buick collided with the back of the Volvo for reasons that are still being looked into.

According to reports from Louisiana State Police, at the time of the crash, Rideaux and the passenger sitting in the front seat of the Buick, Pelican Sr., were not wearing seat belts. They both sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene.

Although it is unclear if either driver was impaired, samples for testing were taken and will be analyzed. The cause of the crash is still being looked into.

Troopers want to emphasize the significance of making safe choices while driving. Though not all crashes can be survived, wearing a seatbelt significantly decreases the risk of death or serious injury in a crash. Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions while driving. Having a plan and making safe choices can make a significant impact on the outcome of future situations.
