Louisiana Driver Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash After Crossing Centerline on LA 1

Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on August 24, 2022, that on August 23, 2022, soon after 6:00 p.m., LSP Troop C received notification of a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 1 near Norma Lane in Lockport, Louisiana. Marcelo Garcia-Lopez, 38, of Lockport, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.

Garcia-Lopez was driving north in a 2005 GMC Canyon on LA Hwy 1 when he was involved in an accident. The GMC began to rotate for unknown reasons, crossed the centerline, and collided with a southbound 2016 Kia Soul.

Despite being securely restrained, Garcia-Lopez sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. Both occupants of the Kia were appropriately restrained as well. The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries, while the front passenger sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Garcia-Lopez was given a toxicological sample, which was then analyzed. The driver of the Kia was not suspected of being intoxicated and readily consented to a chemical breath test, which revealed no alcohol.

While the cause of this incident is still being investigated, motorists should always make sound decisions when driving. Never drive while intoxicated, tired, or distracted.

So Far in 2022, Troop C investigated 31 fatal crashes that resulted in 35 deaths.
