Sorrento, Louisiana - A high-speed crash on US 61 in Ascension Parish claimed the life of a 59-year-old St. Amant, Louisiana, man Saturday afternoon, according to Louisiana State Police.

Jeffery Luquette died after his 2022 Chevrolet Corvette struck the rear of a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe just after 3:00 p.m. on September 6, 2025, near Pond Road. Both vehicles were traveling north on the highway when the crash occurred.

Louisiana State Police Troop A investigators determined that Luquette was driving at a high rate of speed when his Corvette rear-ended the SUV. The impact sent the Corvette off the roadway, where it struck a tree.

Despite being properly restrained with a seatbelt, Luquette suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tahoe driver, who was also wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Police do not suspect impairment played a role in the incident. However, investigators collected a standard toxicology sample that will be submitted for laboratory analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

The fatal crash highlights ongoing concerns about speeding on Louisiana roadways. According to state police, speeding and aggressive driving remain leading causes of deadly crashes across the state.

Excessive speed creates multiple dangers for motorists, including reduced ability to navigate curves or avoid objects in the roadway. High speeds also increase the distance required to stop a vehicle and extend the distance traveled while a driver reacts to emergency situations.
