Louisiana Driver Arrested Following Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash with Pedestrian on LA 182
Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on August 26, 2022, that on August 25, 2022, just before 9:00 p.m., LSP Troop C was alerted of a severe injury hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 182, just east of Louisiana Highway 316. The pedestrian, whose name is being withheld pending notification to next of kin, was killed in the crash.
According to preliminary investigations, Damion Jones, 34, of Gray, Louisiana, was driving east on LA Hwy 182 in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The pedestrian was walking in the roadway of LA Hwy 182 when he was struck by Jones for an unknown reason. Jones fled the area after striking the victim.
The pedestrian was sent to an out-of-town hospital, where they died as a result of their injuries.
Both the Chevrolet and Jones were found a short time later at a house in Gray, Louisiana, where he acknowledged to driving the vehicle. Jones was taken to LSP Troop C, where he willingly agreed to be tested for impairment and was found not to be.
Jones was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on a charge of hit-and-run driving with death. This crash is still being investigated.
While walking near a road, pedestrians should maintain a high level of alertness. Most pedestrian-related crashes can be avoided by taking precautions such as avoiding distractions, not walking too close to the roadway, walking against the flow of traffic, wearing reflective or brightly colored clothes, and ensuring the roadway is clear of approaching traffic before crossing. Motorists must also make sound decisions when operating vehicles. Never drive while intoxicated, tired, or preoccupied.
Louisiana State Police Troop C has investigated 32 fatal crashes resulting in 36 deaths so far in 2022.
