Louisiana DOTD and FBI Warns Public to Beware of Text Messaging Scam Impersonating Tolling Agencies

Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has issued a warning regarding a text messaging scam that is currently targeting individuals nationwide. This scheme involves scammers posing as representatives of tolling agencies and deceitfully requesting payments for purported outstanding toll fees.

The scam entails sending unsolicited text messages to recipients, directing them to a non-affiliated website. Once on the site, individuals are prompted to divulge personal and financial information under the guise of settling alleged balances. DOTD is advising all motorists to exercise caution and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves against internet, and phone crimes.

It is imperative for the public to be alert and cautious, especially when receiving text messages containing suspicious links. DOTD emphasizes that they never request payments through unsolicited messages, underscoring the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of such fraudulent activities.

This smishing scam, part of a broader series of deceitful practices, has garnered the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is actively investigating these occurrences. Smishing refers to a type of social engineering tactic where cybercriminals send deceptive mobile text messages in order to deceive individuals into either downloading malware, disclosing confidential data, or transferring funds to the attackers. To combat this issue, the FBI has suggested several actions for individuals who encounter such fraudulent messages:

  1. Lodge a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov, providing details such as the originating phone number and the website mentioned in the text.
  2. Verify your account status using the legitimate website of the toll service in question.
  3. Reach out to the customer service hotline of the toll service.
  4. Promptly delete any suspicious text messages received.
  5. In case of clicking any links or sharing personal information, take immediate steps to secure your personal data and financial accounts. Additionally, dispute any unauthorized charges that may appear.
