Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Asking for Volunteers for Elmer’s Island Beach Cleanup

Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is looking for volunteers for their next beach cleanup at Elmer’s Island on Saturday, September 17, 2022, in collaboration with the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and Nicholls State University. The program, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., is being hosted in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup Day.

Volunteers will remove, categorize, and weigh trash and debris from about 2.5 miles of Elmer’s Island shoreline during the cleanup. Elmer’s Island, a 1,145-acre piece of marsh and shoreline owned and maintained by the state of Louisiana, is located on the southwestern corner of Jefferson Parish, immediately across Caminada Pass from Grand Isle. The area is traditionally known for its outstanding fishing opportunities and public beach access, which are enjoyed by both families and anglers.

All volunteers must provide their own transportation to the site and must register for this event in advance. Follow this link for further information and to register.

Closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are recommended for participants. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own containers or pail to gather trash in order to reduce additional trash.
