Louisiana Department of Education Reports that Statewide School Performance Has Returned to Pre-Pandemic Level

Louisiana - The Louisiana Department of Education today published 2021-22 school achievement scores for the state's public K-12 schools and systems on November 16, 2022. These findings point to students' ongoing academic recovery notwithstanding enormous school disruptions caused by the virus and many disasters.

According to data provided today, Louisiana's statewide school performance score is currently the same as it was before the pandemic, at 77.1 in 2019 and 2022.

“Returning our statewide performance score to its pre-pandemic level is reason to be thankful, but we have a long way to go for Louisiana’s children,” said Louisiana State Superintendent Cade Brumley. “We must continue to act with urgency to provide even better outcomes moving forward - that’s the challenge we must meet.”

For 2021, a simulated score of 75.3 was generated last year. Louisiana increased 1.8 points to 77.1 when compared to the previous year's projected score. From 2021 to 2022, 48 of the 63 conventional public school systems in this publication improved statewide.

Thirty Louisiana school districts have now equaled or increased their school performance score from the previous year.

When compared to 2020-21 statewide simulated school performance ratings, several measures of performance improved, including metrics from state tests, ACT results, dropout data, and expanded school interests and opportunities indicators.

This is the first time that schools' interests and opportunities have been considered to calculate official school performance scores. This new indicator, approved by BESE in 2018 and set to be implemented in 2019-20, assesses whether schools provide children with a well-rounded education that exposes them to a variety of learning activities. It constitutes 5% of the school performance score calculation.

Data on performance is now available on the LDOE website. By the end of 2022, performance scores will be available on the Louisiana School and Center Finder.

The Department issued 2021-22 LEAP scores in August, showing that mastery rates in ELA and math for children in grades 3-8 improved. The Nation's Report Card, released in October, revealed that Louisiana kids avoided some of the most drastic learning losses witnessed across the country.
