Louisiana Department of Education Releases LEAP Scores, Calcasieu Parish Earned Top 10 Spot
Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Education issued LEAP scores for the 21-22 school year on August 3, 2022. The Calcasieu Parish School Board ranked in the top ten in the state for elementary and middle school growth. These results include the Louisiana schools with the highest growth rates. For one-year growth, Vincent Settlement Elementary, Nelson Elementary, and DeQuincy Elementary are in the top 15. T.S. Cooley Elementary was also ranked in the top ten for overall performance in the state.
Mastery rates in math and ELA improved three points throughout the state for kids in grades 3-8. When compared to 2020-21, 80 percent of Louisiana school districts improved their mastery rate.
“After the impact of a global pandemic and two of the strongest hurricanes in our state’s history, Louisiana’s students are back on their feet,” said State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. “K-12 education is on the rise in Louisiana because we kept schools open, strategically allocated resources, and developed innovative solutions to recover and accelerate student learning.”
In addition to students in grades 3-8 improving three points in math and ELA, and 80 percent of Louisiana’s school systems improving, data from LEAP examinations throughout the 2021-22 school year show:
- In-person learning was a contributing factor to the progress. In 2021, 98 percent of LEAP testers engaged in full-time, in-person learning. This is compared to 57 percent in 2020-21.
- Over the course of the pandemic, students engaged in full-time, in-person learning have outperformed those engaged in virtual learning.
- Fewer Louisiana students scored Unsatisfactory, including a 3-point decrease in students scoring Unsatisfactory in math.
- Mastery rates improved among numerous student subgroups including economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, Asian, African American, and white.
- Mastery rates improved among all individual subject areas for grades 3-12.
LEAP 2025 contains ELA, math, science, and social studies examinations for grades 3–12. The exams assess the knowledge and abilities outlined in the state’s curriculum standards for each grade level. Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic, Mastery, and Advanced are the five levels of student performance. Students who achieve Mastery or Advanced are regarded as proficient, or ready to advance to the next grade level.
