Louisiana Department of Education Announces Comeback Campuses, Including Three in Calcasieu Parish

Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) stated on December 5, 2022, that it is celebrating the effect educators have made on children despite extraordinary challenges during the last two years. The Department of Education named 41 schools as Louisiana Comeback Campuses. Since the pandemic and the impact of two historically active hurricane seasons, these schools have achieved considerable increases in both math and English language arts.

Three Calcasieu Pairhs Schools were included on the list of Louisiana Comeback Campuses. Those schools are, Nelson Elementary, DeQuincy Elementary, and Oak Park Elementary

“Louisiana’s students are coming back stronger, and this movement is being led by students, families, and educators,” said State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. “I look forward to visiting these campuses to recognize their progress and learn how we can accelerate further growth for the children of this state.”

Louisiana Comeback Campuses are schools that have improved their reading and math scores since the pandemic. When comparing the 2022 statewide examinations to 2019, these schools raised the percentage of students achieving Mastery or higher and decreased the percentage of students scoring unsatisfactory in both math and ELA. High school Comeback Campuses improved their ACT scores as well. This high accolade was bestowed upon 41 institutions from 29 school systems across the state.

Over the following two months, Dr. Brumley or a member of his leadership team will visit each Comeback Campus to personally thank educators and students and to conduct a learning walk. The learning tour around campus will allow LDOE administrators to examine the particular measures that led to student progress and gain a better understanding of how they might be used to benefit kids throughout Louisiana.

Comeback Campuses receive a number of advantages, including acknowledgment on Louisiana School Finder and an official banner presentation.

Louisiana Comeback is a multi-pronged effort to regain and accelerate learning lost as a result of the pandemic and hurricane-related school disruptions. In 2021, the LDOE invited school districts around the state to participate in the Louisiana Comeback by pledging to invest a portion of their pandemic relief budget in three major areas: attendance and well-being, recovery and acceleration, and professional learning.
