Lake Charles, Louisiana — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced the substantial completion of an $8.09 million lighting upgrade project on Interstate 210, marking a significant infrastructure improvement for the Lake Charles area.
Construction began in March 2025 on the comprehensive lighting overhaul, which focused primarily on the I-210 Prien Lake Bridge and surrounding areas. The project involved installing 82 new light poles designed to provide enhanced visibility and safety for motorists traveling through this critical transportation corridor.
Workers ran electrical lines and controls both above and below the bridge deck. Under the bridge, workers used a walkway that was installed during a redecking project.
Kiewit Louisiana Co. served as the primary contractor for the multi-million-dollar infrastructure initiative. The company coordinated the installation of modern LED lighting systems, which offer improved energy efficiency compared to traditional lighting technologies.
The project scope extended beyond simple light pole installation. Workers completed extensive electrical repairs and upgrades throughout the affected areas, ensuring the new lighting system operates reliably. Additionally, new glare screens were installed on the east approach of the Prien Lake Bridge to reduce light pollution and improve driver visibility.
According to state transportation officials, the newly installed lighting structures demonstrate superior strength and resilience compared to the previous infrastructure. This enhanced durability is expected to reduce maintenance costs and improve long-term reliability of the lighting system.
The LED upgrade represents part of Louisiana’s broader effort to modernize state transportation infrastructure. LED lighting systems typically consume significantly less energy than conventional lighting while providing better illumination quality. These systems also have longer operational lifespans, reducing the frequency of replacement and maintenance activities.
The I-210 corridor serves as a vital transportation link for Lake Charles residents and commercial traffic moving through Southwest Louisiana. The bridge spans Prien Lake, connecting various parts of the metropolitan area and facilitating regional commerce.
Transportation officials emphasize that while the project is substantially complete, minor finishing work may continue as needed. Motorists can expect improved nighttime visibility along this section of Interstate 210, particularly when crossing the Prien Lake Bridge.
The lighting project represents one of several infrastructure investments the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has undertaken to enhance roadway safety and modernize aging transportation systems throughout the state.
