Simsboro, Louisiana – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F started looking into a deadly single-vehicle crash on I-20 east of LA 563 on the morning of Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at around 8 am. The crash resulted in the death of Yashwanth Popuri, a 32-year-old from McKinney, Texas.
In the first examination, it was discovered that a 2023 Ford Explorer, being driven by Popuri, was heading west on I-20. For reasons that are still being looked into, the vehicle veered off the right side of the road and collided with a tree.
Popuri, who was properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and passed away at the location of the crash. The passenger in the front seat of the Ford, who was also properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Samples for routine toxicology testing were taken and will be analyzed. The investigation into this crash is ongoing.
Troopers want to emphasize the importance of making responsible choices while driving. This includes never getting behind the wheel while impaired, tired, or distracted. It is crucial to obey all traffic regulations and ensure that all passengers are wearing their seat belts. While crashes may not always be avoidable, following these basic precautions can greatly increase the chances of survival in a dangerous situation.
So far in 2024, Troop F has investigated 19 serious crashes that led to the deaths of 20 individuals.
