Gonzales, Louisiana – A devastating crash on July 1, 2024, resulted in the tragic loss of life of 39-year-old Chant Parker of Saint Amant, Louisiana. The incident occurred on LA 429 and Martin Road in Ascension Parish, involving a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas and a bicycle.
According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop A, the Volkswagen was traveling eastbound on LA 429 when it attempted to pass the bicycle, also traveling in the same direction. As the vehicle began to overtake the bicycle, the cyclist suddenly entered the path of the Volkswagen, resulting in a collision. Parker was ejected from the bicycle and suffered serious injuries.
Parker was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 5, 2024. The driver of the Volkswagen, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, escaped without injury. While impairment is not suspected to be a factor, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly for cyclists. Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists, including riding as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. By doing so, cyclists can significantly reduce the risk of crashes and promote a safer environment for all road users.
