In Desoto Parish, Louisiana on June 28, 2023, around 2:00 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop G initiated an investigation into a fatal collision involving two vehicles on LA Hwy 175, just north of LA Hwy 509. Tragically, the crash resulted in the death of an 84-year-old individual named Oristene Jackson, a resident of Mansfield, Louisiana.
Based on the initial inquiry, it was discovered that a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by a person named Jackson, was moving in a northerly direction on LA Hwy 175. Concurrently, a 2015 Honda Crosstour, driven by Priscilla Powell, a 70-year-old individual from Hemphill, Texas, was moving in a southerly direction on LA Hwy 175. It is yet to be determined why, but the Silverado veered across the middle of the road and collided head-on with the Crosstour.
Due to the accident, Jackson, who was wearing seatbelts correctly, unfortunately died from her injuries. The Desoto Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed her death at the crash site. Powell, who was also properly restrained, along with a young passenger in the Crosstour who wasn’t properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. Although there are no indications of impairment, authorities collected typical samples for toxicology tests, which will be examined. The investigation into this collision is ongoing.
Troopers want to emphasize the importance of making responsible choices when driving a vehicle. It is crucial to avoid driving under the influence, when tired, or while distracted. Additionally, it is important to obey traffic regulations and ensure that everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up. Although not all accidents can be avoided, taking these simple measures can greatly increase the chances of survival.
