Church Point, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash that occurred just after 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, on Louisiana Highway 358 near its intersection with Louisiana Highway 357. The crash claimed the life of Alex Chavis, a 38-year-old resident of Church Point, according to authorities.
Preliminary findings indicate that Chavis was driving a 2017 Kia Optima westbound when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2005 Dodge Ram. Chavis was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident and sustained fatal injuries on impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, who was properly restrained, suffered serious injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported that individual to a local hospital for treatment. No updates on their current condition have been released as the investigation continues.
State Police collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers to determine whether impairment may have played a role in the crash. Results from these tests are pending, and investigators continue to examine other potential contributing factors such as distraction or fatigue.
State Police remind all drivers and passengers to always buckle up, follow traffic laws, and avoid impaired or distracted driving. Many serious injuries and deaths on the road can be prevented by these simple actions.
