St. Landry Parish, Louisiana – The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating a fatal camper fire in Washington that claimed the life of a 35-year-old man in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Firefighters with St. Landry Fire District 3 responded to the emergency call shortly after midnight on November 5. The blaze occurred in the 3400 block of Grand Prairie Highway, where crews arrived to find a camper fully engulfed in flames.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered one victim at the scene. The individual was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

State Fire Marshal deputies are currently working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. As part of their investigation, officials are examining whether the camper was equipped with a functioning smoke alarm, though this detail has not yet been confirmed.

DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams addressed the incident by highlighting the critical need for working smoke alarms in all residential structures. The statement underscores ongoing safety concerns regarding fire prevention in temporary and permanent dwellings throughout Louisiana.

The investigation remains active as deputies continue gathering evidence and examining the scene. No additional details about the victim’s identity have been released at this time.

Fire safety officials consistently recommend that all living spaces, including campers and recreational vehicles, be equipped with working smoke detectors. These devices provide early warning signals that can save lives by alerting occupants to fire and smoke before conditions become fatal.
