Louisiana Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Late Night Crash on LA 682
New Iberia, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police reported on November 26, 2022, that on November 25, 2022, shortly before 10:00 p.m., LSP Troop I was alerted of a two-vehicle crash involving a bicycle on Bull Island Road immediately east of LA Hwy 682 (Lake Peigneur Road) in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. Rickey Paul Flores, 44, of New Iberia, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.
Flores was heading south in the northbound lanes of Bull Island Road, according to a preliminary inquiry. At the same time, a 1989 Ford Ranger was heading south on Bull Island Road. Prior to the collision, Flores was forced to steer his bicycle into the southbound lane of travel by an uninvolved car heading north on Bull Island Road. Flores was thrown off the bicycle after being struck by the Ford.
Flores, who was not wearing an appropriate helmet and whose bicycle had no lights or reflective materials, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was unharmed. The driver of the Ford provided a breath sample, which revealed that he had no alcohol in his system. This crash is still being investigated.
Bicyclists should never presume that automobiles can see them, according to Louisiana State Troopers. Wearing an appropriate bicycle helmet and using reflective materials are simple safeguards. Bicyclists in Louisiana are required by law to stay as near to the right side of the road as possible and to respect all traffic laws.
Since the beginning of 2022, Troop I has investigated 58 fatal crashes resulting in 65 deaths.
