Louisiana Bicyclist Killed in Early Morning Crash on LA 1 Near Donaldsonville
Ascension Parish, Louisiana – A bicyclist from Louisiana was killed in a crash on LA 1 near Donaldsonville in the early morning.
On May 1, 2023, Louisiana State Police (LSP) stated that Troopers with Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA 1 north of LA 18 near Donaldsonville, Louisiana, shortly after 1:30 a.m. Macarthur Williams Jr., 53, of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.
According to LSP reports, the initial inquiry found that Williams was riding his bicycle north on LA 1 near the fog line. At the same moment, a 2000 Chevy Silverado was following Williams north on LA 1. The Silverado collided with the back of the bicycle for unknown reasons.
Williams was riding his bike without lights and wearing dark apparel at the time of the crash according to police. Williams died as a result of his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Silverado’s driver was unharmed in the collision. A toxicological sample was acquired from the driver of the Silverado and Williams for analysis as part of the continuing inquiry. LSP indicated that any criminal or traffic infractions discovered throughout the course of the inquiry will be reported to the Ascension Parish District Attorney’s Office.
Louisiana State Police indicated that bicyclists should never presume that a motorist can see them. Basic precautions like wearing an appropriate bicycle helmet, using reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are critical in avoiding crashes and injuries. Furthermore, bicyclists are required by Louisiana law to stay as close to the right side of the road as possible and to obey all traffic laws.
