New Iberia, Louisiana – On January 11, 2025, shortly before 8:00 p.m., tragedy struck on Louisiana Highway 88 (Coteau Road) in Iberia Parish when a crash involving a bicyclist led to a fatality. The victim, identified as 31-year-old Timothy Maturin, Jr. of New Iberia, Louisiana was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the preliminary investigation conducted by Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I, Maturin was riding his bicycle westbound on LA Hwy 88. At the same time, a 2019 Ford F-150 was also traveling in the same direction. For reasons yet to be determined, the Ford collided with the rear of Maturin’s bicycle in the westbound lane, resulting in severe injuries.
Maturin was not wearing a helmet when the crash occurred. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and unharmed. Authorities noted that Maturin’s bicycle was not equipped with essential safety features, such as rear lights or reflectors.
The driver of the Ford was not suspected of impairment. He voluntarily provided a breath sample, which indicated no alcohol was detected. A standard toxicology sample was collected from Maturin and is currently undergoing analysis. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Louisiana law (LRS 32:329.1) mandates that bicycles must have specific lighting and reflective equipment to enhance visibility and promote safety, especially during nighttime riding. These requirements include a white light on the front and a red light on the rear of the bicycle, both visible from at least 500 feet away. Additionally, a rear reflector must be visible from 100 feet, while side-mounted reflectors should be visible from between 100 to 600 feet. These regulations are designed to prevent incidents like the one involving Maturin and emphasize the importance of safety measures when riding a bicycle.
