Louisiana Authorities Arrest Suspect in Early Morning Hit-and-Run Crash on LA 998 that Killed a Pedestrian

Louisiana – Troopers made an arrest in the deadly hit-and-run crash that killed 54-year-old David Gilbert of White Castle, Louisiana, with the assistance of members of the public who contacted Louisiana State Police Troop C with information.

Troopers determined that 34-year-old James Landry of St. Gabriel, Louisiana was the driver of the 2018 Lincoln Continental that struck Gilbert.

Landry was booked into the Assumption Parish Jail on felony hit and run driving, and operating a vehicle while license is suspended after meeting with Troopers. This collision is still being investigated.

Troopers expressed gratitude to members of the public who came forward to share information following the tragedy. Working together, the community and law enforcement can maintain public safety while also ensuring that those who commit crimes are held accountable through the criminal justice system.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Louisiana – On October 16, 2022, Louisiana State Police Troop C was notified of a deadly hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 998 shortly after 8:00 a.m. David Gilbert, 54, of White Castle, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.

According to preliminary findings, Gilbert was walking east in the westbound lane of LA Hwy 998 when he was struck by a westbound car. Following the incident, the vehicle fled the scene. The crash is thought to have occurred after 1:30 a.m. on October 16, 2022.

Gilbert died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

According to authorities, evidence found at the scene indicates that the suspect car is a 2015 to present Lincoln Continental with damage to the passenger side. At this time, the color of the car is unknown.
