Louisiana Authorities Investigating Late Night Officer-Involved Shooting That Wounded One Suspect

Houma, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on September 7, 2022, that on September 6, 2022, at around 12:30 a.m., detectives assigned to the LSP Bureau of Investigations were requested to investigate a shooting involving the Houma Police Department.

At around 8:30 p.m. on September 5, 2022, the Houma Police Department received a call about an armed man engaging in a domestic disturbance at a property in the 200 block of Polk Street. A suspect at the residence opened fire on responding Houma Police Department officers shortly after their arrival. As a result, three officers discharged their service weapons.
The subject, later identified as Gary Vanleuven, 51, of Houma, Louisiana returned to the house and barricaded himself. S.W.A.T. and negotiation teams from the Houma Police Department arrived on the site and attempted to get Vanleuven to exit the residence. Vanleuven surrendered after a lengthy standoff, revealing that he had been wounded by the initial responding police’ firing.

Vanleuven was taken to an out-of-town hospital for treatment. During the event, no law enforcement personnel were hurt.

The Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory is processing the scene of this officer-involved shooting, which is being investigated by the Louisiana State Police. The investigation is still open and ongoing. More information will be released when it becomes available.
