Louisiana Attorney General Announces $1.8 Million Distribution Of TurboTax Settlement to State Residents

Louisiana – The Louisiana Attorney General has announced the distribution of a $1.8 million settlement from TurboTax to state residents.

On May 4, 2023, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said that consumers who were duped into paying for free tax services by TurboTax’s owner, Intuit, will begin receiving checks from a $141 million multistate settlement announced in May 2022. The deal approved by all 50 states and the District of Columbia will result in checks being mailed to approximately 4.4 million customers nationwide.

Louisiana will get $1,834,090.82 in compensation for the 60,237 people who were duped into paying to prepare their federal tax returns. The settlement will be communicated to eligible consumers through email. Checks will be mailed throughout the month of May 2023.

“Through deceptive marketing, Intuit cheated more than 60,000 of our low-income neighbors in Louisiana,” said Attorney General Landry. “Today, we are getting money back into those taxpayers’ pockets.”

Customers who paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016, 2017, and 2018 but were qualified to file for free through the IRS Free File Program are eligible. Rust Consulting, the settlement fund administrator, will notify consumers who are eligible for a payout via email. These customers will receive a check in the mail without having to file a claim. Checks will be mailed out beginning next week.

The amount received by each consumer will be determined by the number of tax years for which they qualify. The majority of customers are likely to receive between $29 and $30.
