Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has been appointed as co-chair of the National Association of Attorneys General’s (NAAG) Tobacco Committee. This position tasks her with leading a coalition of 52 state and territory attorneys general in their efforts to enforce, defend, administer, and improve the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA).
The Tobacco Committee plays a vital role in overseeing the MSA, a landmark agreement between the tobacco industry and state governments. The MSA, reached in 1998, imposed significant restrictions on the advertising, marketing, and sales of tobacco products. It also provided funding for anti-smoking programs and health-related initiatives.
In addition to her responsibilities related to the MSA, Attorney General Murrill will also provide leadership on tobacco matters not directly related to the agreement, including the growing concern of vaping. As co-chair, she will work closely with Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark, her bipartisan counterpart, to address the evolving landscape of tobacco-related issues.
Attorney General Murrill and Attorney General Clark received their first briefing on August 8, 2024, marking the beginning of their tenure as co-chairs of the Tobacco Committee. Their leadership will be instrumental in shaping the national response to tobacco-related challenges and ensuring that state attorneys general remain at the forefront of efforts to protect public health.
