Denham Springs – Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a young Denham Springs resident early Sunday morning. Matthew Temple, 13, was struck while cycling on a state highway during pre-dawn hours.
According to authorities, the incident occurred shortly after 1:20 a.m. on April 27, 2025, on LA 1026 near Magnolia Boulevard in Livingston Parish. Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to the scene where a 2008 Dodge Dart collided with the rear of Temple’s Huffy bicycle.
The preliminary investigation revealed both the cyclist and the vehicle were traveling westbound in the same lane when the crash occurred. Temple, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
The driver of the Dodge, who remained at the scene, was properly restrained and uninjured. As part of standard procedure in fatal crash investigations, toxicology samples were collected and will be analyzed, though authorities have not indicated impairment as a factor at this time.
The crash highlights ongoing concerns about bicycle safety, particularly for young riders during nighttime hours. Louisiana traffic safety experts note that reduced visibility presents significant challenges for both cyclists and motorists at night.
State Police used the opportunity to remind the public about bicycle safety regulations, noting that Louisiana law requires cyclists to ride as close to the right side of the roadway as practical, with exceptions for passing or preparing for left turns. They also emphasized the importance of safety equipment and visibility aids.
Wearing a properly fitted helmet, using front and rear reflectors, and choosing bright or reflective clothing significantly enhances a cyclist’s visibility to motorists.
