Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana — Several government offices across Calcasieu Parish, including the offices of the District Attorney, School Board, City of Lake Charles, Parish Assessor, and City of Westlake, will close on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Other local government offices are also expected to close, though formal announcements were pending as of press time. All non-critical state and federal offices will also observe the holiday, with services paused for the day.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865. On that day, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued orders declaring the freedom of all enslaved people, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Over time, Juneteenth became a symbol of African American freedom and achievement, evolving into a day to celebrate Black culture, community, and progress.
After decades of advocacy, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, joining other major national observances such as Independence Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All federal employees now receive June 19—or the closest weekday if it falls on a weekend—as a paid holiday.
