Lake Charles, Louisiana — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) will temporarily close the right lane of Interstate 10 eastbound from Exit 27 (Mile Marker 27) to Mile Marker 30.6 beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025. The closure is scheduled to continue until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as crews conduct vital roadway and guardrail repairs near the Ryan Street overpass.
Despite the lane closure, Exit 27 and Exit 29 ramps will remain open to traffic, minimizing disruptions for drivers accessing or leaving the interstate at these points. DOTD advises motorists to exercise caution in the area, obey posted construction zone speed limits, and watch for workers and equipment.
Purpose of the Closure
DOTD officials stated that the overnight closure is necessary for crews to repair damaged asphalt and guardrail sections. Keeping these features in good repair is essential for highway safety.
Impact on Drivers
Motorists traveling eastbound on I-10 through Lake Charles should plan for potential delays during the closure period. The left lane will remain open, but traffic congestion is possible, particularly during peak travel hours in the evening and early morning. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes if possible.
DOTD’s use of an overnight schedule for this project aims to reduce inconvenience for the majority of daily commuters, as traffic volumes are typically lower at night. However, drivers should remain alert for changing traffic patterns, construction signage, and the presence of workers or equipment on the roadway.
Safety Reminders
Work zones can be hazardous, both for drivers and for the crews performing repairs. DOTD urges all motorists to slow down, avoid distractions such as mobile phones, and respect all posted signs and flaggers’ instructions. Fines for speeding in construction zones can be significantly higher, reinforcing the importance of safe driving practices.
