Lake Charles, Louisiana – The City of Lake Charles Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission (MAFC) will host a special dual ceremony on Saturday, June 14, commemorating the 250th birthday of the United States Army and honoring Flag Day with a flag retirement event. These back-to-back observances are set for Veterans Memorial Park, located on Lakeshore Drive, a site renowned for its tributes to military service and local heroes.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. as MAFC President Capt. Kelly Miseles, US Army (Ret.), leads the program at the First Lieutenant Douglas B. Fournet statue, situated at the park’s entrance. This statue honors Fournet, a local Medal of Honor recipient whose sacrifice stands as a significant chapter in military history and is a focal point for visitors reflecting on the shared values of duty and patriotism.
Immediately following the Army birthday celebration, at 6 p.m., the MAFC will conduct a flag retirement ceremony. This formal process allows community members to bring American flags that are no longer serviceable for proper and respectful disposal, following U.S. Flag Code guidelines. The ceremony will be overseen by MAFC member and U.S. Marine veteran Richard Morgan, ensuring traditions of respect and honor are upheld.
Veterans Memorial Park, located just south of I-10, is well-regarded for its serene atmosphere and prominent military monuments, including a World War II tank and a Vietnam War-era helicopter, making it a fitting backdrop for the dual celebration. The park’s location along the Lake Charles Event Center boardwalk provides ample space for reflection and community gathering.
Seating at the park is limited, so attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to ensure comfort during the ceremonies. Those seeking additional details are invited to contact MAFC Liaison Tanya Senegal at (337) 491-1383.
These events provide the Lake Charles community a unique opportunity to honor both the long-standing history of the U.S. Army and the enduring significance of the American flag as symbols of national service and unity.
