Lake Charles, Louisiana – In a collaborative announcement on Monday, March 17, city officials and leaders from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Pelican Chapter revealed plans for a new workforce development school located in the former Walgreens building at the intersection of Gerstner Memorial Drive and 12th Street in Lake Charles. The initiative, largely financed through Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Funds, aims to revitalize a vacant structure while providing essential skills training to the local community.

Mayor Nic Hunter emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “Any time we can invest in a project that will help our citizens enhance or gain new skills to improve their lifestyle, it is a worthy endeavor.” He expressed enthusiasm about ABC Pelican Chapter’s involvement, highlighting their successful track record in the region. This school marks the first time the organization will operate within the city limits of Lake Charles.

ABC Pelican Chapter is one of 68 chapters of a national trade association representing over 21,000 members in the construction industry. The organization aims to provide training in various skilled trades, including carpentry, welding, and millwright, among others. David Helveston, President and CEO of ABC Pelican Chapter, noted, “This project is all about investing in the people of Lake Charles. In this facility, we will train several hundred students a year, resulting in a workforce prepared for both commercial and residential construction needs throughout the area.”

Construction on the new facility is anticipated to commence later this year, with an expected completion date set for the first or second quarter of 2026. District C City Councilman Rodney Geyen highlighted the significance of this program, stating, “This will offer kids in high school and adults of all ages the chance to develop skills that will enhance their personal economic development, and in the long run, our city’s economic development.” Geyen expressed eagerness to encourage local youth to take advantage of the upcoming opportunities.

The ABC Pelican Chapter’s new facility promises to bring substantial workforce development advantages to Lake Charles, equipping local residents with the skills necessary to thrive in various trades.
