Lake Charles, Louisiana – The Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) has announced a prescription drug take back event in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024. This initiative aims to address the growing concern of prescription pill abuse and theft by providing a safe and anonymous way for residents to dispose of their unwanted prescription medications.
According to the LCPD, officers will be stationed near the front entrance of the Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 2011 Ryan St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During this time, residents can drop off their unwanted prescription pills for disposal. However, the DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. This service is free and anonymous, allowing residents to dispose of their medications without fear of repercussions.
This take back event marks the 27th opportunity for the public to participate in the initiative over the past 15 years. The DEA reports that last year’s event resulted in the collection of over 600,000 pounds of prescription drugs at more than 4,869 sites operated by the agency and its state and local law enforcement partners. Since the inception of the Take Back program, the DEA and its partners have collected an impressive 18 million pounds of pills.
The importance of this initiative lies in addressing the alarming rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States. Medications that are left unattended in home cabinets are susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Furthermore, the improper disposal of these medications, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, poses potential safety and health hazards.
Sgt. Shawna Aymond of the LCPD emphasized the significance of this event, stating that it provides an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription medications and contribute to the prevention of pill abuse and theft. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or the Take Back Day event, residents can contact Sgt. Aymond at (337) 491-1320.
Many pharmacies also accept medications for disposal year-round. Contact your local pharmacy for more information or look for a disposal container on your next visit.
