Lake Charles, Louisiana – The City of Lake Charles Utilities Division has provided an update concerning the ongoing lane closure on Nelson Road, also known as State Route 1138-2. The closure stems from a recent incident where a fiber optic boring company inadvertently struck and damaged a 24-inch sewer line beneath the outside southbound lane of travel, while crews were addressing a collapsed sidewalk south of the intersection with McNeese Street.
Following the discovery of the damaged sewer line, city officials engaged a local engineering firm to assess the situation and design the necessary scope of work for repairs. In accordance with lawful procurement procedures, several quotes were solicited, and the contractor offering the lowest responsive bid was awarded the job after receiving approval from the Lake Charles City Council.
Upon mobilization, the contractor began repairs; however, during the process, further complications were identified that necessitate additional attention before final repair work can proceed. To address these unforeseen issues, a second contractor has been brought on board and is anticipated to commence work within the next week.
Once this additional work is completed, the final repairs can be carried out. City officials estimate that, weather permitting, the road could fully reopen within three to four weeks. It is important to note that, as a state route, the traffic management plan in place complies with the requirements set forth by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD).
Furthermore, the City’s Risk Management Division is actively involved in this process, working diligently to determine the responsible parties for the damage inflicted upon the wastewater infrastructure.
Residents and commuters are advised to remain cautious in the area and to follow any detour signs as the city continues to work on these essential repairs.
