Lake Charles, Louisiana - In a move to capitalize on the growing potential of offshore wind energy, the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources (DENR) has appointed Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter to its newly established Offshore Wind Advisory Committee. This committee, in collaboration with the Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX), aims to create an Offshore Wind Roadmap that will serve as a strategic guide for harnessing the state's potential in this emerging energy sector.

The committee's first virtual meeting took place on September 5, 2024, marking the beginning of a two-year journey to develop and implement the Offshore Wind Roadmap. This roadmap is expected to provide a framework for Louisiana to tap into the economic benefits of offshore wind energy, creating quality jobs and attracting new investments.

"I am honored to serve on this committee," said Mayor Nic Hunter. "The energy sector, which is rapidly growing and evolving, plays a major role in the economic success of Southwest Louisiana. With our close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and as a hub for industrial innovation, it is vital that Lake Charles has a seat at the table as offshore wind conversations take place."

As a coastal state with vast offshore resources, Louisiana is well-positioned to take advantage of the growing demand for renewable energy, reducing the state's reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to a more sustainable future.

The Offshore Wind Advisory Committee, comprising various stakeholders and experts, will work together to identify opportunities, challenges, and strategies for developing Louisiana's offshore wind industry. By doing so, they aim to create a comprehensive roadmap that will guide the state's efforts in this sector over the coming years.
