Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter Shares Positive Outlook on Sears Demolition

Published April 25, 2021

Demolition has begun on the old Sears building attached to the Prien Lake Mall in Lake Charles. After being hit hard by Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020, that part of the building was considered a total loss. While many people may have fond memories of shopping in the Sears attached to the Prien Lake Mall, Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter has a positive outlook on what the future may bring for the location. He also talked about some upgrades coming to the Cinemark Theatre.

From Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter:

Yes, the Sears Building at the Prien Lake Mall is coming down. While this is bittersweet for some, it is actually more of a positive sign for our mall. The owners have reinvested insurance proceeds back into the structure. This is reassuring. This means they’re committed to the asset!
Today, we see some empty spaces, but we also see a mix of new tenants popping up. This is also reassuring!
The Sears building was deemed a total loss, and yes, they are demolishing that portion of the mall. It will exist as green space for the time being.
Cinemark is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation and will be state of the art when complete.
All in all, the future of the Prien Lake Mall is bright! Even after the devastation of a Pandemic, 2 hurricanes, and an ice storm, our Prien Lake Mall remains one of the stronger malls of its size in the US.
