Lake Charles, Louisiana – Austin Blalock, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, is facing ongoing mobility challenges after a devastating crash in September 2021 left him quadriplegic. Blalock was jogging in the 5000 block of Bob Hall Road, south of Allie Payne Road in Orange, Texas, when he was struck by a vehicle.

Emergency responders transported Blalock to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Texas, where police described his injuries as “incapacitating.” Since the crash, Blalock has suffered paralysis from the neck down and remains unable to move his arms or legs. He has not received any compensation related to the incident.

After relocating to Lake Charles, Blalock has relied on Medicaid for transportation to numerous medical appointments. Consistent access has been a major struggle, as ride cancellations and no-shows are frequent, further complicating his rehabilitation and ongoing care. This transportation barrier has made it difficult for him to maintain his health and attend necessary treatments.

The community, traditionally known for its generosity, has been hard-pressed since Hurricanes Laura and Delta severely impacted the region, straining local resources. Despite these hardships, Blalock’s longtime friend Jac has supported him most of the time since the crash by working two jobs while also managing Austin’s daily needs. Their situation has highlighted the urgent need for reliable wheelchair-accessible transportation.

Blalock is near the top of the list to receive a wheelchair van donated through a charity specializing in helping individuals gain independence after life-changing injuries called Liberty Memes Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. The organization has become increasingly popular, leading to lengthy waitlists and high demand as families seek greater mobility for their loved ones.

Advocates emphasize that access to a wheelchair van would transform Blalock’s daily life, providing safer, dependable travel to medical appointments and limited opportunities for recreation and community engagement. The donation of such a van would represent a significant improvement not only for Blalock but also for those responsible for his care.
