Capital One Tower in Lake Charles Facing Demolition Ahead of November Deadline

Lake Charles, Louisiana - The iconic Capital One Tower in Lake Charles may soon face demolition well before November, as per the deadline set by the city for building owner Hertz Investment Group to either restore or remove the structure.

Bob Schlogel, Hertz's vice president of capital projects and engineering, revealed that the first phase of an asbestos study, necessary for the demolition process, has been completed. Bids for an implosion-style demolition have also been received.

The Capital One Tower sustained significant damage from Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020. Initially, Hertz aimed to repair the tower by June 2022, but delays in settling with their insurance company led to a pause in construction. Once the insurance settlement was received, the building was put on the market in March 2023.

To safeguard the city's interests, the administration intervened in the Hertz lawsuit against the insurance company, ensuring $7 million would be held in escrow for demolition if Hertz failed to act by November 2024.

Speculations abound regarding the cause of the tower's damage, with some attributing it to a tornado during Hurricane Laura's landfall, while others suggest that the building's windows were not designed to withstand the hurricane's powerful winds.

The 41-year-old Capital One Tower, owned by Hertz Investment Group, was estimated to require over $150 million for renovation. Standing at 22 stories and 375 feet tall, the tower offers 400,000 square feet of space and is situated on a four-acre lot that includes an attached parking garage.
