Lake Charles, Louisiana — The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury officially dedicated the “Collins-Mayo Fitness Court” at Mallard Junction Park in Lake Charles during a ceremony held Tuesday, honoring two late Police Jurors from District 2, Calvin Collins and James Mayo. The newly renamed fitness court recognizes both leaders’ significant contributions to the community and their lasting impact on local development.
Calvin Collins, who passed away at 80 in 2020, served the parish across five terms between 1996 and 2020. During his tenure, Collins played a key role in vital infrastructure improvements for District 2, such as the construction of the Allen P. August Annex, enhancements at Mallard Junction Park, road and drainage upgrades, modernization of water treatment systems, and waterline extensions.
James Mayo, who died in 2014 at age 52, was elected in 2011 and served as Vice-President of the Police Jury in 2013, as well as chairman of the Public Works Committee. Mayo’s legacy also includes inspiring the annual “Christmas at the Courthouse” event, which began in 2015 to fulfill his vision of seeing the Historic Courthouse decorated for the holidays.
The Collins-Mayo Fitness Court, officially unveiled April 9 at Mallard Junction Park, is an open-air workout area that enables visitors to exercise using their own body weight. The court is designed for a complete workout in just seven minutes—with each exercise lasting 45 seconds and followed by a 15-second rest period. Instructions are available at each station, and users can further access routines through the free “Fitness Court” app.
Mallard Junction Park, located at 599 August Street in Lake Charles, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. The park offers amenities including playgrounds, a basketball court, baseball field, walking track, pavilions, and picnic areas, making it a popular destination for recreation and community gatherings. For details on park facilities, residents can contact the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s parks department.
