Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced a series of shoulder closures on Interstate 10 eastbound and westbound, as well as surrounding service roads, between mile markers 25 and 31. This stretch covers parts of Westlake and Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish. The scheduled closures will begin Friday, June 6, 2025, and continue through Sunday, July 6, 2025, weather permitting.
Some of the work is in preparation for the construction of the new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge.
According to DOTD officials, the closures are necessary to facilitate a variety of preconstruction activities and regular maintenance tasks. These include surveying the area, collecting soil samples (soil borings), and inspecting or repairing essential infrastructure such as bridges, guardrails, lighting, and drainage structures. Additional work includes debris and litter removal, as well as mowing to maintain roadside vegetation.
These preconstruction activities are a standard part of infrastructure planning and maintenance. Surveys and soil borings help engineers assess ground conditions before any major construction begins, ensuring safety and structural stability. Maintenance on bridges, guardrails, and lighting is crucial for driver safety, while keeping drainage systems clear prevents roadway flooding during heavy rains—a common concern in Louisiana.
Officials remind motorists to use caution when driving near work zones, even when lanes are not closed. Workers and equipment will be close to active traffic lanes, so reduced speed and increased attention are advised.
The DOTD noted that all work is weather dependent. Heavy rain or other adverse weather conditions could delay the schedule, as safety for both workers and drivers remains the top priority.
