Baton Rouge, Louisiana – The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance has awarded a $500,000 grant to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office to acquire a cutting-edge digital High Definition (HD) Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) camera system for its Air Support Unit’s helicopter. This advanced technology is designed to significantly enhance the quality of aerial surveillance, search and rescue operations, criminal investigations, and apprehensions.

The new system will provide high-resolution imagery, allowing law enforcement personnel to more effectively identify potential dangers and take swift action. This improved safety feature is particularly crucial for officers engaged in high-stakes operations, as it enables them to respond more accurately and efficiently.

The service area for this project encompasses the City of Baton Rouge, the Parish of East Baton Rouge, and the surrounding eight parishes that make up the Baton Rouge Metropolitan area. This expanded coverage will facilitate more effective collaboration and information sharing among law enforcement agencies, ultimately leading to enhanced public safety and crime reduction.

The FLIR camera system is a sophisticated tool that captures high-quality images in various environmental conditions, including nighttime and low-visibility situations. This advanced technology will enable the Air Support Unit to provide critical support to ground units, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies and conduct investigations.
