Louisiana – A tropical disturbance in the northwestern Caribbean Sea is gaining attention, with models suggesting it could develop into a strong hurricane. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is expected to issue its first track for the system, currently known as Invest 97L, on Monday.
According to the NHC, disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and portions of Central America are associated with a broad area of low pressure. Environmental conditions appear conducive for development, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form within the next few days as the system moves northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
Residents between Louisiana and Florida are advised to stay vigilant, as the current consensus of models suggests the system could make landfall east of Louisiana. However, it is essential to note that the track of the storm can change, and residents should closely monitor updates.
The disturbance is expected to produce heavy rains over portions of Central America during the next several days.
The NHC has assigned a medium chance of formation (50 percent) for the next 48 hours and a high chance of formation (80 percent) within the next 7 days. As the system develops, the NHC will provide regular updates and advisories.
Residents in the affected areas should review their hurricane preparedness plans and stay informed.
