Incident Involving a Firearm Reported at LaGrange High School in Lake Charles

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office reported on August 17, 2022, that around 3:00 p.m., the CPSO School Resource Officer at LaGrange High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, was outside when he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from a group of students. A loaded weapon and a small amount of marijuana were discovered inside a 16-year-old student’s backpack during a subsequent search by the administration.

The student was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in a firearm-free zone, possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone, illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and possession of marijuana.

Lake Charles, Louisiana – The Calcasieu Parish School Board reported an incident involving a student with a firearm on the LaGrange High School campus on August 17, 2022. A gun was confiscated from a student who brought it to school, according to the school board. There was reportedly no danger to any of the students, faculty, or staff.

CPSB went on to say that no students or faculty were ever threatened. The school administration handled the incident immediately, with the help of a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office school safety officer. The school board also wishes to reassure parents and guardians that CPSB schools are a safe environment for their children, that they are confident in their crisis management strategies, and that they are constantly practicing safety protocols and procedures.
