Denham Springs, Louisiana – On September 15, 2024, a three-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 447 resulted in the death of 58-year-old Michael McManus from Denham Springs, Louisiana. The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. near Parkway Drive in Livingston Parish.
Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. According to their findings, McManus was operating a 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on LA 447, following a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. As the Suburban slowed and signaled to make a left turn onto Parkway Drive, McManus failed to stop in time, causing his motorcycle to collide with the rear of the Chevrolet.
The impact ejected McManus from his motorcycle, propelling him into the southbound lane of LA 447. Tragically, a 2017 Honda Accord traveling in the opposite direction then struck McManus.
Authorities reported that McManus was not wearing a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Louisiana State Police investigators suspect impairment may have been a factor in McManus’s actions, and a toxicology sample will be analyzed to determine if this was the case.
The drivers of the Chevrolet Suburban and Honda Accord were properly restrained and escaped the incident without injury. Both drivers voluntarily submitted to chemical breath tests, and impairment is not suspected on their part.
As the investigation continues, Louisiana State Police remind motorists of the importance of safe driving practices. They emphasize the need to avoid impaired, fatigued, or distracted driving, and to follow all traffic laws. For motorcycle riders, the use of proper safety equipment, particularly DOT-approved helmets, can significantly reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury in the event of a crash.
The Louisiana State Police encourage all motorcycle enthusiasts to participate in approved safety courses. Information on helmet guidelines and rider safety programs can be found on the Louisiana State Police website at www.lsp.org/services/training/motorcycle-safety/.
