Impairment Suspected in Louisiana Fatal Crash that Killed One Child, Injured Another on Highway 146

Claiborne Parish, Louisiana – A two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 146 near Public Boat Ramp Road claimed the life of a 5-year-old child and severely injured a 10-year-old child on September 28, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. when a 2015 Toyota SUV crossed the centerline and collided with a 2014 Dodge Ram.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to the scene and initiated a preliminary investigation. According to the findings, the Toyota, driven by 31-year-old Jordan Burton of Homer, Louisiana was traveling west on Highway 146 when it crossed into the oncoming traffic lane and struck the eastbound Dodge Ram.

Burton, who was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The 5-year-old child, who was improperly restrained in the rear seat of the Toyota, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The 10-year-old child, who was also improperly restrained in the front passenger seat, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Dodge, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a local hospital.

Louisiana State Police indicated that impairment on the part of Burton is suspected, and toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.

Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists of the importance of making responsible decisions while operating a motor vehicle. This includes never driving impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Additionally, Louisiana law requires that every person inside a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain properly restrained.
