On September 26, 2023, a fatal single-vehicle crash took place on LA Hwy 865 near Cowart Road shortly after 2:00 p.m. The crash was investigated by the Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F. Tragically, the crash resulted in the death of Katheryn Ferard, a 48-year-old woman from Rayville, Louisiana.
The initial inquiry showed that Ferard was at the wheel of a 2004 GMC Yukon, heading north on LA Hwy 865. Unexplained causes resulted in Ferard veering off to the right side of the road. Ferard tried to regain control of the GMC by turning left, but oversteered, causing the truck to swerve off the left side of the road and hit a tree.
Ferard, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt according to LSP, was thrown from the vehicle and was declared dead on the spot.
Police indicate that it’s suspected this collision may have involved impaired driving. Standard drug and alcohol tests have been carried out and the samples are set for analysis. The investigation into this crash is ongoing.
Law enforcement officers urge drivers to consistently make safe choices when they are behind the wheel. Do not operate a vehicle if you are under the influence, tired, or not entirely focused, always adhere to traffic rules and make sure that every passenger is safely buckled in.
Although not all crashes can be avoided, by taking basic safety measures like these, you could potentially save a life.
In 2023, Force F has conducted inquiries into 28 deadly accidents, which have led to 33 fatalities.
