Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - The long-awaited I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge Replacement Project is set to transform travel through Calcasieu Parish, offering a substantial upgrade to a corridor vital to Lake Charles and its neighbors. State and federal officials, in partnership with Calcasieu Bridge Partners, have launched "A Bridge to Progress," a public video campaign designed to showcase the forthcoming changes and to give locals a visual roadmap for the area's future transportation hub.

The new bridge replaces the original span, built in 1952, which has exceeded its safe capacity for decades. More than 90,000 vehicles cross daily, over double what the structure was designed to support. The $2.3 billion project will address growing congestion, improve safety, and provide upgraded infrastructure to meet economic demands in one of Southwest Louisiana’s busiest regions.

Running for 5.5 miles from Ryan Street in Lake Charles to the I-210/I-10 interchange in Westlake, the project goes beyond simply rebuilding a bridge. The new corridor will feature six travel lanes and two auxiliary lanes to smooth traffic flow, an elevated Sampson Street overpass to eliminate delays from passing trains, and significant improvements for future transportation options, including multimodal connectivity. Enhanced roadway lighting and a reduction in bridge height bring the design in line with modern standards, while construction methods and materials have been chosen for durability and efficiency.

A key feature of the project is the implementation of electronic tolling. Tolls will be collected via the statewide GeauxPass system once the bridge opens, with a 50-year concession period during which Calcasieu Bridge Partners will operate and maintain the bridge. The state will retain approximately 15 percent of toll revenues. To encourage carpooling and reduce traffic-clogged commutes, a 50 percent discounted HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) rate applies for drivers carrying three or more passengers during peak hours.

The project is a public-private partnership (P3), allowing for private investment to supplement public funds and accelerate project delivery. Calcasieu Bridge Partners—a consortium- will fund, build, and manage the bridge for a 50-year term.

While demolition of the old bridge will wait until the new span is open, preconstruction activities, including permitting, design, land acquisition, and geotechnical surveying, are underway. Completion is projected for 2031. State and federal funds will cover nearly $1.2 billion of the $2.3 billion project cost, signaling a major commitment to the future of Calcasieu Parish transportation.

Residents, commuters, and business stakeholders are encouraged to view the "A Bridge to Progress" video presentation for detailed orientation and updates as this transformative project advances.
