Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana – A devastating two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 29 near Overbey Road in the early hours of July 4, 2024, resulted in the tragic loss of two lives. Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to the incident at approximately 1:30 a.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a 2001 GMC Sierra, driven by 63-year-old Shepherd Roy Jr. of Bunkie, Louisiana was traveling northbound on Louisiana Highway 29 when it crossed the centerlines into the southbound travel lane. The Sierra collided head-on with a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 75-year-old Robert Johnson of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
Both Roy and Johnson, who were not wearing seatbelts, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities suspect impairment as a contributing factor to the crash, and routine toxicology samples have been obtained for analysis.
The Louisiana State Police urge motorists to exercise extreme caution and plan ahead when consuming alcohol, prescription drugs, or other substances that can impair driving abilities. These substances can affect visual ability, alter time and space perception, and slow reaction times, making it dangerous to operate a motor vehicle.
As of July 4, 2024, Troop E has investigated 32 fatal crashes, resulting in 36 fatalities. The Louisiana State Police remind the public that if you feel differently, you drive differently, and encourage motorists to prioritize road safety.
